Migraine headache introduction and symptoms

Migraines normally first occur in young adults with about 1 in 4 women and 1 in 12 men in the UK suffering from migraine headaches. Hormones are thought to be the reason that more women have migraine attacks. Some women suffer from migraines at the time of their period. Migraines differ from person to person, with some sufferers having several attacks per week, whilst years may elapse for others.

There are two types of migraine – migraine with aura and more commonly migraine without aura. Attacks with aura have a warning sign before the migraine starts. This takes the form of visual problems, such as flashing lights and stiffness in the limbs, neck or shoulders.

Migraine attacks follow five stages, although not everyone goes through each stage. A pre-headache stage of changes in mood, energy and behaviour, sometimes with aches and pains. The aura stage of flashing lights and blind spots. The headache stage of throbbing pain in one side of the head, sensitivity to bright light and vomiting. The resolution stage when the headache stops following sickness. And finally the recovery phase, where sufferers feel exhausted and weak.

How to treat migraine?

Migraines should ideally be treated at the start of the attack. Migraines can be treated with Sumatriptan tablets or Imigran nasal sprays. You should also avoid factors which may trigger an attack, such as certain food and drink (eg alcohol, cheese, chocolates and citrus fruits), bright lights or loud noise.

There are also some non prescription medicines which can be tried including Imigran Recovery and Solpadeine Migraine tablets.
